Jiye Kim is Korean visual artist and writer based in Tokyo.
Originally trained as a sociologist, she investigated workings of power in the modern Asia. Though she loved researching and writing in such a context, she left her academic journey wishing to explore different modes of expression.
Drawn by the critical bent of the documentary photography, Jiye pursued a master’s degree in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography in the University of Arts London. Her current practice is concerned with personal histories and a sense of place by which one’s identity and life choices are revealed and understood. She often marries images and words to surface lived experiences of her subjects in nuanced and intimate ways.
Being a mother of two small children, Jiye is also interested in examining her own identity as an artist with care responsibility, taking it as a lens through which to create more authentic works and critically engage with industry practices.
